Cheese and Chilli: Affordable UK Food Festival for Families

The sort of day out that feels like a treat, not a tumble in your bank balance

I do not know about you, but I have a soft spot for a family day out where nobody ends up whispering, “How much did that cost?” into their sleeve on the drive home. Food festivals can be brilliant; then you get there and realise a single snack has the price tag of a small mortgage. Not ideal when you have hungry children and a long afternoon ahead.

That is why I have been smiling to myself about the 2026 Cheese and Chilli Festivals popping up across five locations in the south of England. Christchurch, Reigate, Winchester, Chichester, and Guildford. Proper places for a wander, a nibble, and a bit of fresh air, without the stress of a huge trek or a huge spend.

And yes, it sounds a bit like the start of a joke. Cheese and chilli. But it works. Somehow it really works.

Kids go free, which is basically music to a parent’s ears

Here is the part that makes parents sit up a bit straighter. Kids go free. Honestly, that alone changes the whole feel of the day. You can bring the gang along, even the one who claims they only eat beige foods, and you are not paying extra just for them to have a look around and demand an ice cream five minutes in.

Adult tickets start from £6 or £8 at the Very Early Bird Rate, depending on the session. That is the kind of price that lets you say yes to a day out without doing that mental maths routine in the kitchen first. You might even leave a bit of wiggle room for a couple of tastings or that jar of something you swear you will use in cooking all the time.

I have done plenty of festivals over the years. The expensive ones can be great, but affordability is its own kind of luxury. It means you relax. You do not grip your wallet like it is going to escape.

Cheese, chilli, and the joy of trying something new

The best family friendly festivals are the ones where everyone finds their own little moment. The grown ups get to potter and chat, maybe try a new cheese, maybe go brave with a chilli sauce. The kids get colours, smells, stalls, and that lovely sense that something is happening everywhere.

And if you have a cautious eater, do not worry. There is usually plenty that is mild, friendly, and familiar. Plus, trying “just a tiny bit” is half the fun. You will hear yourself saying it too. Just a tiny bit. Then someone surprises you and goes back for more.

There is something very British about the whole thing. A relaxed stroll, a bit of queuing, and a bit of chatting to strangers about what they are eating. You go home slightly tired, slightly full, and in a better mood than you expected.

A simple plan for a really good day

Pick your nearest spot, rope in a friend or two, and make it a proper outing. Not rushed. Not overplanned. Let it be one of those days where the highlight is simply being together, wandering, tasting, laughing, and not checking the time every five minutes.

Ready to bag the very early bird rate and plan your next affordable UK food festival.
